Details from the iPhone Dev Team blog indicate the Mac version of QuickPwn is only compatible with firmware 2.0.2 at the moment, and until demand settles down it will only be available as a Bittorrent download. No problem there, it only took a couple of minutes to complete when I just tried it so there's plenty of seeders out there. I'll give it a try in the morning, and post screenshots if anything looks different to the previous QuickPwn for Windows.

Warhawk is one of the best online games for the Playstation 3. I've been playing it since December 2007 and still have yet to tire of it. One thing that helps are the expansion packs. First there was Omega Dawn, then Broken Mirror and now Fallen Star. Fallen Star is probably one of the best expansion packs so far. It adds a whole new environment to the game and a new item, the Icarus Mk. 1 Rocket Pack.

First, the level. Tau Crater is a medium sized island that plays host to the crash site of an unnamed space ship, located in the middle of the map. This level has much elavation which is great for the Rocket Pack. As usual, the level is mirrored and there are 9 bases on the whole map. The level also has many trees and even some caves. There are 10 layouts to this map, but also 30 more that add Rocket Packs to older maps.

The Rocket Pack is great. You can grab one by running up the the Daedalus and pressing square. Now you will have it until you die! You can enter and exit vehicles (even warhawks) with it on. The controls for the Rocket Pack are fairly simple. R2 to go up and L2 to hover. If you double tap R2 you can do a boost, essential to dodging rockets. The Rocket Pack adds a whole new dimension to the Warhawk gameplay and I don't know how I played without it!

This pack is highly recommended. It is available from the Playstation Network Store for $7.99. Alternatively, if you do not own the other packs, you can get all 3 for $15.99.

Hey guys, I know uncharted is a bit old, but I figured some of you might have missed it. Overall Uncharted is great, I highly recommend you check it out, as it's a lot of fun.

Here's a quick review, with a short once over on the basics of the game.

Story: Uncharted's story good enough to keep you interested the whole way through, if a bit Indiana Jones-ish. There's a large twist near the end that changes gameplay, but I wont spoil it.

Visuals: The game looks great. You won't find the typical gray tan and brown most games use exclusive now, but lush jungle environments. The textures are great, the animation looks lifelike and fluid, transitioning from running to jumping to ducking behind cover and popping out to shoot all looks natural and great. The plant-life will move if you bump into, grass with trample underfoot, the game looks great.

Controls: The Controls work well too. Snapping to cover always works, running jumping climbing and gunning is all easy, nothing seems out of place or awkward, nothing to complain about.

Gameplay: You'll be doing a mix of platforming and shooting. Both are fun and work well. You do take damage pretty quickly in shootouts, so you'll need to stay behind cover most of the time. You can expect to run out of ammo in all but the shortest firefights, so you'll have to be quick collecting ammo and getting back behind cover. Near the end of the game there's a huge twist in the story that changes the way you play, but I wont spoil it for you.

Sound: All the sound is well done. The voice acting in the cinematic is good, drakes little comments to himself etc sound great. Weapons have a nice punch, the music is good and has some exotic instruments in it, making for a nice change.

Extras: Uncharted has a built in medal system, just like trophies (if you have your PS3 connected to the Internet, you can download a small, and free update to add trophies to the game). As you unlock medals for various achievements, like getting 100 head shots, or 50 kills with a certain weapon, you'll unlock bonus content, like behind the scenes videos, alternate costumes, unlimited ammunition for certain weapons, etc. If you have the trophy patch, you'll earn a trophy along with each medal you unlock.

Replay: Uncharted's main downfall is it's length. Sadly the whole adventure is over in around 8-10 hours on your first play through. While it's definitely worth a second play through, you probably wont want to play it again for the 3rd time, Unless you really want to get all of the trophies, or unlock all of the bonus content.

Final Thoughts: While uncharted is a great game, I just don't think its length warrants a full $60 purchase. You're better off renting it and finishing it once or twice over the weekend.

8/10

(this wasn't taken by PS Opinions, and is from a prelease build of the game, meaning the retail version is going to have some slight differences from it, but it's still a good video, showing off some gameplay)

I have been developing software in one shape or another most of my adult life. I started in High School, with Basic. Now I am building n-tier web applications, with dynamic content and database driven techniques. Over the last 10 years, so much has changed with regard to software development, but one thing has always been the same - there is a delicate balance between timelines and quality.

Today's software development world is much different than it was. There was a time when companies could spend lots of time in the planning stages. We had meeting after meeting, created flow charts, database diagrams, prototypes, then more meetings, power lunches until finally we had a functional and/or technical spec we could work off and begin coding. In years past, I would get sick of all of the darn meetings we had and would get anxious to start coding. Everyone in the community used to talk about how bad it was to start coding too early, before you had a design in place, dotted all the i's, crossed all of the t's.

Then came the dot.com era. Companies started to pop up everywhere, two or three guys sitting in a converted garage with endless pots of coffee and apparently no social life started pumping out software that - although may have had tons of bugs and were short of functionality - started to eat into the profits of the big guys. They ruined it for all of us. All of a sudden, Quality Assurance was no longer a necessity but a cost companies couldn't afford. Developers were no longer just developers. We became project manager, testers, release managers, tech support. Big companies, now having to compete with smaller, more agile start-ups, had to get lean and mean. We had layoffs, and we were asked to do more for less.

I will never forget the day my development manager sat down our entire staff and told us the news. He told us that soon we could see about half of the Quality Assuance staff laid off. We would no longer be able to "throw code over the wall" and expect QA to find all of our bugs. We were not allowed to push code to QA unless it was "bug free". Oh, and yeah, we need you to now write code faster. We could no longer have releases every few months. Releases would be expected every few weeks, with less QA time, and fewer bugs, because we had no time to dedicate to bug fixing in future releases.

WHAT!?!?!?!?!?

I thought I had just stepped into the twilight zone. How do you expect us to write code faster, with fewer bugs, with fewer testers? He had no answers. I actually told him what he was asking was impossible. He didn't care.

Well you know what? Even though I am no longer with that company, it is still around and doing ok. Such is the life of a developer these days. We are asked to do more with less. So the moral of this story?

Software development in today's world has become "agile". We no longer wait for the planning stages to be over before coding. We code right away. Things get "worked out" along the way. Is it better? No I don't think so. I don't really believe I have been proud of the code I have written lately. I write code that is "good enough" to be released and get the job done. But it is hard to write elegant code when you have to release it a week ago. We do spend lots of time fixing bugs that could have been avoided before release, and there are plenty of times when business needs simply don't get completely satisfied on an initial release. But the company I work for is successful, and the code I write for them is a significant part of that so I guess I shouldn't complain.

So maybe I will never actually see a real functional spec or a real QA tester again. Am I getting old?

Ah, the good ole days...

The Library Success wiki defines podcasting as
a simple means of distributing audio content over the

The Library Success wiki defines podcasting as

a simple means of distributing audio content over the Internet, taking advantage of the power of RSS. Content consumers (end-users) can subscribe to a feed of a producer's audio content and receive automatic downloads of new content as it is made available online.

Podcasts can be listened to on a computer or transferred to a portable audio device like an iPod or other MP3 player. Watch Common Craft's video, Podcasting in Plain English, for an easy-to-understand introduction.

So what's the difference between a podcast and the other 'casting we've covered so far (vodcasts, screencasts)? For the purposes of this blog and grant, I'm referring to podcasts as audio files without video included.

Getting Started

To create a podcast, you'll need some basic equipment:

A microphone - we purchased a Blue Snowball and a Sennheiser headset with mic for you to try out.

Or a portable recording device - give our Olympus portable recorder a try, also purchased with the grant money.

Some software - the 'Casting Kit laptop has 2 options for you to play with, Audacity (free) and ePodcast Producer.

A good place to get started is Cnet's tutorial, which includes videos, on how to create your own podcast. Another good starting point is UW-Madson's podcasting plus, a guide that includes everything from what podcasting is to how to create them to teaching & learning with podcasting. SirsiDynix Institute also has several archived presentations that will give you a good understanding of the basics. See:

There are also tons of great books out there, just search for podcast? for a comprehensive list of books and articles.

Ideas and Examples

A few ideas for what your library could do:

Record author visits and other library programming (with permission, of course!)

Bibliographic instruction (where visuals aren't a must)

Guided walking tours

Book reviews, new materials highlights, book discussions

Community news

Work with local teens to start their own podcast for the library (see An Outlet for Creativity: Plugging In with Teen-centered Podcasting by Meredith Farkas)

Services for the visually impaired

Some library/librarian examples of podcasts to further inspire you:

Denver Public Library podcasts: Stories for Kids!

PLCMC's LibraryLoft Podcasts

Worthington Libraries: Programs to Go

Uncontrolled Vocabulary: a live discussion of news, trends, and topics in librarianship

Other podcast examples from Libraryland are linked to on the Library Success wiki, so go explore! You can find other examples of podcasts, library-related or otherwise, using a podcast directory, such as Podcast Alley, iTunes, or podscope.

Using the 'Casting Kit Equipment

Here are a couple of brief videos to get you started with the equipment purchased for the 'Casting Kit:

Microphones: Blue Snowball & Sennheiser headset

Olympus portable recorder

You can download Audacity for free, if you'd like to be able to edit your podcasts on your own computer. Otherwise, you can try Audacity or ePodcast Producer on the 'Casting Kit laptop. Here's a video tutorial for ePodcast Producer and some additional tutorials on how to use it. If you happen to have a Mac, you probably already have GarageBand and could work with it.

Adding Music

You may want to consider adding music to your podcasts, but be sure to use music that isn’t copyrighted. There’s lots of free music out there that you can use under Creative Commons Licenses, and many people posting this music only ask that you attribute the work to them in the credits of your video. Check out this article about Using Music in Your Podcast for more recommendations for using podsafe music.

Here are some sites you can explore, just check the license for each song to see how you’re allowed to use it.

Creative Commons: Audio - includes a list of other sites in a sidebar

Podsafe Audio

ccMixter

podsafe music network

Legal Music for Videos - a list of sites, along with good information on using songs with Creative Commons licenses on them

Choose a Host

Because the OWLS Web Services Policy states…

Member library staff may not load audio or video files on an OWLS web server. In order to conserve server space and bandwidth utilization, media projects (e.g., podcasts, vodcasts) should be hosted on remote sites recommended by the Library Services Manager.

… you will need to decide where you would like to post your podcasts. The current recommended hosts are available at http://www.owlsweb.info/web/hosts.asp and there are additional host options included in the del.icio.us links.

Embed!

Once you’ve posted your podcasts online, you’re almost done. The next step is to be sure to embed them in your library’s web site. Most hosts provide easily embeddable code for you to simply copy and paste into your web pages and/or blog(s). Doing this will ensure that your patrons will find your hard work and will be able to play the podcast right from the page without having to go to your remote host site.

Anything Else?

I have that feeling again that I’m forgetting something really important! I think the list of resources above should get you off to a good start, and besides, I’ll be here to lend a helping hand if/when you need it! All of the links included in this post are also in del.icio.us/castingkit.

Reading some materials suggested by Kif in preparation for practicum (1pm-3pm ).

These articles should come in handy when evaluating Omeka, which the library has installed for testing. For my real (i.e. paid) job, I recently visited the Center for History and New Media to discuss how Omeka can be integrated with CSU's CONTENTdm-based collections to create exhibits that are more visually attractive, focused, and interactive than CONTENTdm usually allows. However, at the moment, we are only capable of transmitting metadata using OAI-PMH, and have not yet developed an API capable of "scraping" actual objects (i.e. allowing Omeka to natively display objects that are located in a CONTENTdm repository). So one of the things I will be doing for my practicum is investigating how Omeka can be used at the library - with or without the API.

It also appears that I will get to sit in on some meetings, such as the ebrary webinar mentioned in my last post, where technology choices will be discussed and software will be evaluated.

Based on the readings listed below, the major areas of consideration when selecting digital library software are:

establish a clear and specific project statement that includes the scope of the project, infrastructure dimensions, and the overall purpose of the project

explore the software functionality requirements that must be met to accomplish project goals and meet user needs

explore practices at similar - and dissimilar - institutions to better understand the issues involved, compare a variety of approaches, and set a baseline for functionality

determine the characteristics and practices of the user community using empirical data

rank and prioritize functionality requirements to determine a baseline and to set forth a plan for development and added functionality over time if needed

examine the viability of the vendor

determine the security and authentication features of the software - including the granularity of user access and privileges - to determine how the software fits into existing institutional systems

consider whether the budget and other resources available will meet the demands of the new software

come up with a plan for training and documentation

if the plan is part of a Universal Service Fund, it should additionally include an assessment of the institution's technology environment, a coherent strategy for meeting specific goals for improvement, and an established evaluation process for monitoring progress and making necessary changes mid-course

[caption id="attachment_397" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Apple new Tablet"][/caption]

Is Apple working on a Mac Tablet, or as I think they will call it .. a Macbook Touch?? Well Apple has been developing interface technology that would allow for a multi-touch support. The patent for a gesture system would adapt many of the basic control scheme elements that are familiar to Mac OS X to a touch input environment which is larger than an iPhone or iPod Touch.

An example, that you can see later in the submitted picture, the close, minimize and maximize buttons in the title would expand as the user touch them, therefore they will be more easy to click.

[caption id="attachment_390" align="aligncenter" width="468" caption="Close - Min - Max"][/caption]

Another feature that would be different from the iPhone, is the scroll feature. Unlike iPhone, where you just scroll with one finger, this "Mac Tablet" uses two finger, like the normal touch pad in apple laptops, and one finger to tap a selection. Another good feature is the On-Screen Keyboards that would be larger than the one you can find on the Mac OS. This keyboard recognize one finger at a time for key combinations.

Another great feature is that an iPod-like scroll wheel appears from scrolling through media or to scroll faster elsewhere. Dials and similar rotary controls are also discussed as possibilities.

This device publication was noted by Apple for the first time in 2004. The new filing was submitted much more recently, in April 2008 and follows an application for this multi-touch device revealed in July. This application is a DJ set, where DJ's can use this 'Tablet' to use it as a DJ set. Also it is essential for video editors and designers.

No words from Apple about this device yet but is widely believed to be in long-term development of larger touch devices that would have a more complex interface, faster components, potentially involving the Intel Atom architecture. Early predictions would have had at lest one device release in 2008, though this no longer certain and may be pushed back to 2009 if introduced.
