Nur keine Hi-Tech-Instrumente, die sich wie von selbst spielen. Jack liebt die Herausforderung, muss sich den richtigen Klang erarbeiten. Insofern liegt auch das neueste Werk „Icky Thump“ in der Tradition früherer Alben der White Stripes. Blues, Rock, Country, Folk à la Jack. Jedoch etwas kräftiger aufgetragen, farbenfroher. Ausnahmsweise sind auch Gastmusiker erlaubt. Keine großen Namen, Studiomusiker aus Nashville. Ein Mariachi-Trompeter spielt auf „Conquest“, ein Dudelsack-Spieler auf zwei weiteren Stücken. Eine Reminiszenz an Jacks schottische Wurzeln. Also alles wie gehabt und doch anders.

Nashville trägt zwar den Spitznamen „Music City, USA“, aber im Grunde wäre doch „Country Music City, USA“ zutreffender. Fühlt ihr euch wohl in dieser musikalischen Umgebung?

Allerdings. Für mich stellt dieses Nashville das perfekte Gegengift zu all diesen coolen Hipster- und Garagen-Rock-Sachen dar. Das konnte ich einfach nicht mehr ertragen, davon musste ich unbedingt wegkommen. Deshalb erschien es mir logisch, nach Nashville zu gehen, wo der Musikbetrieb im diametralen Gegensatz dazu steht. Hier herrscht eher die unverblümte Einstellung vor: ‚Wir wollen nur einen Haufen Platten verkaufen und jede Menge Geld scheffeln’. Damit fühle ich mich wohler, denn diese Leute fragen nicht danach, ob ich cool genug oder independent genug bin, ob ich noch für Punk oder Underground stehe. All diese fürchterlichen Worte, von denen ich früher selbst dachte, dass sie eine Bedeutung für mich hätten, bis ich begriffen habe, dass es sich nur um Worthülsen handelt. Sie bedeuten für nichts und niemanden etwas, das ist nur Bullshit. Es war geradezu ein Segen, in Nashville anzukommen und diese Dinge hinter sich zu lassen. Alle diese Leute, die dich heute umgeben, die Zyniker, Hipster, Blogger, Internetkritiker, Independent-Punkrock-Kids und der ganze Mist, diese Leute werden schon im nächsten Jahr nicht mehr da sein. Sie lieben die Musik nicht um ihrer selbst willen. Sie lieben die Musik nur wegen der Identität, die sie ihnen verleiht. 

Es geht ihnen nur um das Image? 

Image und Identität. 

In Nashville funktioniert das Musikbusiness ohnehin ganz anders... 

Ja, die Country-Musiker, die in dieser Stadt arbeiten, packen ein hübsches Foto von sich auf das Cover ihres Albums. Und warum? Weil sie so viele Platten wie möglich verkaufen wollen! Da ist es ihnen egal, dass in der nächsten Wal-Mart-Filiale eine große Pappfigur von ihnen steht, die ihr Album trägt. Und im Restaurant um die Ecke hängt ein Foto von ihnen, auf dem sie ein Steak hochhalten. Das lässt die völlig kalt. Und aus diesem Grunde liebe ich diese Leute. Die haben so ein unverschämtes Glück. Das erlebe ich immer wieder, wenn ich mich in Tennessee aufhalte und mit Leuten wie Loretta Lynn zusammen bin. Sie hat ein Kochbuch veröffentlicht und arbeitet als Werbefigur in den TV-Spots von Crisco…

Crisco? 

Das ist ein berühmter Hersteller von Backfett in Amerika. Loretta wirbt für dieses Produkt. Das ist keine große Sache für sie. So etwas bewundere ich. Diese Leute haben es wirklich geschafft, sie müssen sich über nichts Gedanken machen. Dagegen ist diese bescheuerte, zynische Independent-Punk-Rock-Welt, einfach nur verlogen. Wenn du Loretta Lynn triffst und dich mit ihr unterhältst, bekommst du genau das, was du erwartest. Das spiegelt sich in ihren Songs wider, das steckt in ihrer Crisco-Werbung und in ihrem Kochbuch, und dasselbe findest du in ihrem Wohnzimmer vor. 

Euer neues Album klingt mal wieder so, als ob euch die Arbeit daran wirklich Spaß gemacht haben muss... 

Das bekommen wir öfter zu hören, und es fällt mir immer schwer, darauf zu antworten. Jedenfalls dann, wenn ich eine ehrliche Antwort darauf geben will. Natürlich könnte ich einfach sagen: ‚Na klar, es hat Spaß gemacht.’ Aber ehrlich gesagt, bin ich mir da gar nicht so sicher. Ich habe nicht wirklich „Spaß“ beim Musikmachen. Und ich bin mir noch nicht einmal sicher, ob ich überhaupt jemals „Spaß“ dabei haben will.

Today I took the opportunity of enjoying LA's beautiful weather to drive up to Malibu and connect with my Mallorquin friend Christian Escario, who is directing Alex von Furstenberg's new surf/skate lifestyle brand CLOUT. Christian has been doing an amazing job with the brand and renovation of its store in Zuma. I was really inspired by his creativity in branding the renovated space and merch. Above is a picture of this awesome display of skateboards, which are hung on an old dry cleaner rack that the cute boys behind the skate counter kindly obliged to operate. It was a bit of a thrill to see the skate decks rotate in front of me and we can't wait to see the final result of the shop's renovation at the opening party we are planning for them on the summer solstice.
